Youth Committee Events
The Laguna Niguel Youth Committee has organized and participated in special events since its inception in May of 2000. In addition to attending their own monthly meetings: they have two additional meetings annually with the Park and Recreation commission and the City Council. The youth committee volunteers their time at numerous Park and Recreation events such as, the Haunted Trails, the Holiday Parade, The North Pole Adventure, and the Earth Day Celebration. Their goal is to create a working relationship with the City Council and other city organizations in an attempt to give the teens of Laguna Niguel a strong voice and presence in the community.
The committee has been involved in creating, promoting, and participating in events such as: the annual Battle of the Bands, (a showcase for high school bands), Teens for Turkeys, (food collection to benefit those in need), donations have gone to the Second Harvest Food Bank, and in 2009 the committee collected food for the City's adopted Marine unit. The committee has hosted two job fairs with the Dana Point Youth Board, as well as a friendly game of kickball between the two committees.
The Youth Committee has given input to the Traffic Commission on ways to advertise to teens to prevent drinking and driving, especially during the spring "prom season." They have also helped Police Services in their mock disaster trainings, which are held to train the volunteers of the Citizens Academy.
The Youth Committee has also hosted two dance instruction evenings where teens learned to salsa, and swing dance. They have suggested topics for Teen workshops, such as "Surviving and Thriving in College", which helped educate teens on how to shop and prepare healthy foods on a college budget.
